Have You Heard the News? Gray & Yellow Are In for 2021

December 16, 2020

To say we were over the moon when Pantone revealed their not one but TWO Colours of the Year for 2021 is an understatement.

As many of you may already know, each year Pantone chooses a colour that they claim will dominate in the year to come. Past selections have included everything from Ultra Violet and Living Coral to the most recent Classic Blue of 2020. But for 2021, they stepped it up and unveiled two Colours of the Year, which they believe represent not only the trying year we’ve all endured but also what lies ahead.

The two colours picked were (drumroll please).... Ultimate Gray and Illuminating! In non-Pantone speak, this equates to a medium grey and a bright, sing-songy yellow… sound familiar? That’s right, Pantone’s 2021 Colours of the Year perfectly match WAXON’s chosen colour scheme that was created almost nine years ago.

Pretty magical, right? In a year where most would have thought a harsh, depressing black was a shoo-in for Colour of the Year, Pantone surprised us with something optimistic, intended to signify the light at the end of the tunnel after an otherwise catastrophic year.

According to Pantone’s website, Ultimate Gray and Illuminating are “A marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.” The official press release goes on to say that the two distinct colours showcase how different elements can come together and support one another. Pantone describes the colour combo as “practical and rock solid” but at the same time “warming and optimistic.” Overall, Pantone views their 2021 Colours of the Year as the epitome of strength and positivity, encapsulating a deep sense of thoughtfulness with the grey hue, while simultaneously expressing a sunny and friendly vibe represented by the yellow.

As soon as we read the explanation for Pantone choosing these colours, we couldn’t help but draw parallels to ourselves and why our Founder & CEO Lexi Miles Corrin, picked these two colours to represent WAXON. When WAXON was first founded almost nine years ago, our team spent months trying to come up with the perfect colour scheme to represent our brand. We eventually settled on something very similar to Pantone’s 2021 Colours of the Year because like them, we also felt they struck the perfect balance between serious and fun, thoughtful and optimistic (not to mention the fact that they look pretty damn great together). “I wanted to design a business that took something that has been around for forever (waxing), and make it better; ‘a new take on an old technique,’ as we say. So the idea was to make the service experience better in a space that was fun and uplifting but also stands the test of time,” shares Lexi.

At WAXON, we have always sought to convey that we take hair removal seriously, and that is exactly what the deeper grey tone expresses. “The grey really shows our foundation that we built our business on which is our training, our people, and the education,” says Lexi. Lexi has stated from the beginning that she wanted WAXON to be a business that focuses on one thing and does that one thing really well, and that’s hair removal. That is why you won’t find a single one of our Waxologists who isn’t a certified aesthetician, or a single one of our Laserologists who isn’t a certified medical aesthetician. In addition, all of our employees must graduate from our internal WAXON Training Program before joining our team, and our Laserologists must complete Cynosure’s professional science and safety course. In essence, WAXON is a serious brand that you can trust, which is exactly the message we wanted to convey by choosing grey as one of our primary colours.

Meanwhile, the bright yellow that pairs beautifully with our chosen grey is a testament to our fun side, and the lighthearted, happy space we wanted to provide people with. The yellow signifies the second part of our mission at WAXON, which is to ensure every client genuinely enjoys their experience with us. This should begin the moment you walk in the door and extend all the way through to the end of your appointment. Our goal is to make you feel comfortable and make the experience of hair removal a pleasant one. Our sunny attitudes, fun work culture, and on-trend interior have revolutionized the hair removal experience, and we can’t think of a better colour combination to represent that.

“We take our craft very seriously in terms of the work behind it and making people feel safe and comfortable but then apply a lot of fun and lightheartedness, and it’s the perfect combination,” shares Lexi.

As we see it, the timeless colour combination of grey and yellow represents where WAXON was when it first opened but also where we are now, and where we plan to go in 2021. These colours provide a feeling of hope and resilience, “proof that even in a pandemic, we survive - we are strong,” says Lexi Miles Corrin.
