Tips To Up Your Hair Removal Game

December 02, 2020

Whether you’re a total novice or have been getting your hair removed for years, you might not be aware that the secret to the perfect WAXON Experience lies in our products and technique, but also in your commitment to doing your “homework”.

At WAXON, we're passionate about perfecting our craft and offering the most exceptional service, but we're also passionate about inspiring (and encouraging) pre and post care,  because a flawless end result in hair removal doesn’t just depend on how good your Waxologist/Laserologist is (by the way, they are all incredible), but also on what you do prior to and in-between appointments.

It’s a 50/50 relationship and we’re all in, are you?

Here are some things you can do to up your hair removal game!

Exfoliate and Trim Pre-Appointment

All waxing clients are encouraged to exfoliate their skin leading up to their appointment, as this helps remove dead skin cells and prepares the skin for waxing. In addition, if your hair needs to be trimmed or shaved prior to the treatment, we ask that you do that on your own time. If you’re getting waxed, the hair should be the length of a grain of rice (about a quarter inch), but if you’re getting laser, then you’ll want to shave all areas being lasered as thoroughly as possible the night before. Of course, when it comes to shaving, we understand it can be difficult to get every spot, so your Laserologist will be happy to touch you up with one of our disposable razors if necessary.

Keep the Contraindications to a Minimum Pre-Appointment

You’ll want to avoid sun exposure to make sure your skin isn’t sensitive or worse, sunburnt - ouch! Avoid acne medication and chemical facial peels if you booked a waxing or laser session for anywhere on your face. Also, it's best to wait a minimum of two to three weeks after undergoing any cosmetic procedure, such as Botox or dermal fillers, before you have the same area waxed or lasered, to ensure everything has healed.

Reduce Potential Discomfort

Whether you’re new to the hair removal game or a total veteran, numbing cream is always an option and a great one if you’re a nervous waxer. We recommend using a numbing cream if you’re pregnant or it’s that time of the month, as elevated hormone levels usually mean you’re more sensitive below the belt (and let’s be real, in general lol). If this is something you’re interested in, we recommend using Zensa Numbing Cream, which is best applied to the treatment area 20 to 30 minutes prior to your appointment. You can cover it in plastic wrap, if you want to help activate the cream faster while keeping your clothing clean.

Do Your "Homework  "

Between appointments, remember to Exfoliate. Exfoliate. Exfoliate. Exfoliating makes your skin smoother; it refreshes the skin by sloughing off dead skin cells and helps prevent ingrown hairs. For best results, exfoliate in one direction, in the opposite direction of hair growth. We also recommend using an ingrown hair serum such as South AHA/PHA Ingrown Serum on a daily basis. It contains acids such as AHA and PHA to exfoliate the area and help prevent and/or heal ingrown hairs as well as any blemishes. It’s great for below the belt to keep everything smooth sailing down south.

Plan Ahead  (If Possible)

It’s always a good idea to book your next appointment when you check out, even if you have to reschedule - we’re flexible. In order to see the best long-term results, which includes a reduction in hair growth over time, appointment frequency matters. Booking your appointment every 4 to 6 weeks will ensure your hair is at the perfect length (think the length of a grain of rice) for a flawless, less painful wax service with a lower chance of ingrown hairs. Booking ahead also ensures you also are able to book your preferred day/time with your favourite Waxologist/Laserologist.

Go Outside Your Comfort Zone

Everyone always talks about the brazilian service or a leg or lip wax, but some of our clients favourite services are ones they tried once and now it’s part of their monthly visit. Here are a few that we highly recommend you try!

The Arm Wax $32:
Your arms will never look and feel better than after a fresh wax. It helps make them appear more defined and they’ll be so smooth, your special someone won’t be able to keep their hands off of you!

The Nostril Wax $11:
Let’s be real – no amount of nostril hair is cute... and trimming is no fun. One nostril wax service will keep you hair-free much longer and trust us, after you have it done, you’ll never want to go back to your trimmer or tweezers again.

The Underarm $18:
Keep those underarm hairs at bay and say sayonara to stubble and 5’clock shadow. This service keeps your underarms smoother far longer than any razor can offer and reduces typical maintenance (which is what makes it so popular).

Le Proper Derrière $42:
A favourite among our male friends, this service is way underrated. If you know, you know, until then... just trust us.

So, there you have it. Our words of wisdom. Follow all these tips and your hair removal game will be on point!
